A year ago, Steve Olenski, has already alerted the management that Why C-Levels Need To Think About eLearning And Artificial Intelligence. To that Jim answered AI is important in any situation where we want to scale up or speed up tasks that normally require human intelligence to complete.
Now after a year, we see a surge in the blogs discussing AI in e-Learning.E-Learning carnival looks at some notable blogs, each one of them brings in a different perspective.
Nikos Andriotis of eFront questions Will Artificial Intelligence bring real smarts to eLearning? He mentions that the following stuff can be automated using AI – Individualized learning, Learner profiling, Self-correcting curriculum & Automatic Content creation. He scares me out when he asks further will it be able to replace eLearning instructors? Maybe — in the long run. Is the fear that AI will kill some jobs real? I don’t know. Find it out here.
A.J. O’Connell from Litmos shows the mirror to Artificial Intelligence which shows Intelligent Augmentation as the precise reality, a term coined in the 1960s. In her blog Augmented Intelligence, Not Artificial Intelligence: E-learning’s Game-Changer,” she says there are limits to what artificial intelligence can do: machines don’t make right decisions on their own, and they’re not creative. Intelligent Augmentation (IA) pairs the things people do well (creativity, learning, and making appropriate decisions) with the things machines do well (remembering, storing and parsing data) so both humans and machines can be better at their jobs. Chatbots, Personalized Learning, and Data Analysis are going to be a little better.
The Carnival stops at eLearning Company where we see the practical application of Artificial Intelligence in E-Learning. It’s an interesting case study on developing eLearning course that would allow customer service center staff to practice conversations with the customers who are not satisfied with the quality of the products received. They not only provide the problem statement and solution, but they reveal the entire solution to the Articulate community. Oh my gosh, they showed the java code too. It looks like Artificial Intelligence is knocking the door.
Ehsan Memari of SkyPrep narrates the 4 Ways AI Will Shape the Future of E-Learning. According to him Real-time Questioning, Gamification, Natural Language Processing and Fast paced & efficient Learning will take the front seat. But he is not so sure because AI seems to be the silver bullet, it will take some time before taking over the entire e-learning industry.
The PolCode team from Poland takes a very pragmatic approach. They shirk away from Artifical Intelligence (After Microsoft’s AI chatbot, Tay, turns a racist, feminist and what not.) and rests with Machine Learning. They start with “ The days of AI-driven androids walking among us are still a distant future away, but we can already reap the benefits of machine learning and artificial intelligence by utilizing their potential in, for example, eLearning.”
Finally, E-Learning Carnival finds a real AI Implementation in Learning Pool’s Otto, the industry’s first virtual personal learning assistant for workplace learning. An artificial intelligence-driven chatbot, Otto sits in the workflow pushing and pulling information and courses to the learner to create a true performance support tool. Wow! That’s Eureka!
