Bloom’ taxonomy is one of the approaches used to deliver the right training. The framework of Bloom’s taxonomy assists in creating learning objectives and assessments. It has been in existence since 1956 for classroom training. However, it was revised in 2001 in order to meet the modern approaches of learning such as e-learning. In e-learning, Bloom’ taxonomy is used for developing course learning objectives. It also helps in determining learner’s behavior, which can influence the learning objectives.

Bloom’s taxonomy, if applied in e-learning focuses on the cognitive domain of learning. Knowledge and development of intellectual skills is the core of cognitive domain. In order to impart knowledge and develop behavior, learning objectives must be defined. Here is a run-down of steps for designing a course or lesson plan in e-learning:

Knowledge- The first and basic stage is to give knowledge to the learners through appropriate courses. Though it’s a basic stage, it requires the correct selection of the content modality. Knowledge could be delivered in the form of textual content, videos, audios, images, animations, etc. The selection of the form of content completely depends on the type of knowledge to be delivered.

  1. Comprehension- Knowledge is knowing something, and comprehension is about understanding something. It is something that shows the lowest level of understanding. This stage is about testing the learner’s knowledge to find out if they understand the training. Every LMS comes with different testing tools. So, an instructor can choose any tool to test the learner’s understanding. 
  2. Application- This stage is all about applying the knowledge gained by the learners into practice. Here, the instructor helps the learners to put knowledge into practice through different techniques. Simulation, role playing, branched scenarios are some effective techniques for this stage. Instructors should simulate real-life problems in the practices for effective learning.
  3. Analysis- In this level, learners need to develop a strong knowledge about the subject matter. They can also be tested through various tools to ensure their level of knowledge. The questioning and testing functionality of an LMS can be used here. Its social platforms like discussion forums can help the learner to develop a strong understanding of the course. It also facilities interaction and sharing of knowledge among the learners.
  4. Evaluation- Evaluation can be said as a more confident form of analysis. At this level, learners are required to evaluate what they have learnt. Now, they have gained enough knowledge to make recommendations and decisions based on their research and evaluation. In this level, the learners can also serve as a mentor for the newest members. Though they cannot fully manage everything, they can be very helpful.
  5. Creation- Creation is the highest level of thinking behavior where learners can create and demonstrate their work. At this stage, learners have the potential to generate their own ideas. Here, the learner might be asked to develop a plan or process for the company. At this level, learners need to put together their original work based on the concepts they have learned. 

Defining clear and crisp objectives at every level is a crucial part of learning. It is the basis for determining instruction mode, content modality, evaluating method, etc. Using Bloom’s taxonomy in e-learning has bridged the gap between the knowledge learners acquire and the application of that knowledge. In a nutshell, Bloom’s taxonomy is an efficient approach for composing e-learning.
